To be content…

Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content. I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need. I can do all things through him who strengthens me
Philippians 4 v 11-13

Recently I have struggled with questions about God’s love for me. You see there is this one thing that I wanted God to do for me. I prayed, trusted and feel like I fulfilled my end of the bargain but God just didn’t come to the party. I threw tantrums, got angry with God, and asked Him why He didn’t care. From where I stood, if God cared he would have answered my prayer you see. If He really cared, He would have given me this one thing that I thought would make me happy. In that moment my joy and fulfilment hinged on this one thing happening, it had become the one thing I sought after. In seeking after that one thing I lost sight of the many blessings I already have. As I write this today, I am so glad my prayers were not answered. I thank God in His infinite wisdom, He answered to my prayer with, not now or not yet or maybe His answer is a no. I am not sure I can live with His answer being no but if what Paul the apostle says in the above quote is anything to go by. I can learn to live with a no. If the answer to my prayer is a no then I am willing to learn to be content.

Paul says he has learnt to be content in every circumstance. Think for a moment, would you be able to boldly say this like Paul. This means I am going to be happy in whatever situation. I will be happy whether my prayers are answered or not. I will be happy whether I become the millionaire I dream of becoming or not. I will be happy whether I meet the spouse I am waiting for or not. I choose to be content. I choose to be content whether I get to stand before thousands or just to an audience of one. Being content is the attitude we need to excel. Being content says right here and now I will have the best day of my life. I will give life my best shot and continue to do so.

I am happy today not because God has answered my every prayer. I am happy with who I am and will not hold off living until I become the person I DREAM of. I am happy for what I have today. I am living in this moment today and happy in it. If my prayer gets answered I will be happier but my joy is not dependent on events. My happiness and joy is the attitude I choose to unleash on every circumstance. I am content…. Are you?
