Do it afraid!

Today for the first time I went to drop off a friend at the airport. My husband is the one who does those kinds of chores in our household.  He did not want to wake up early so I volunteered to take our friend to the airport. As I thought about what I had volunteered to do, I began to doubt myself and I almost chickened out. I thought what if I oversleep? Well, morning came and as my alarm went off, I got up, got dressed and was ready before my friend arrived. As she got to our gate and rung me my husband asked if I was going to be ok. I wanted to tell him the truth that I was afraid but instead I told him I was going to be okay.

I drove my friend to the airport and came back home in one piece. You might be asking yourself what is the big deal about driving someone to the airport? Now that I have done it, it is no big deal really. The airport has the same road signs and traffic rules as the rest of the country. The roads are the same too. I know this because I have taken that first drive to the airport and realised there are no big lions that will tear my car apart and have me for dinner at the airport. I realised as I drove back from the airport what the statement do it afraid means. I had driven to the airport despite my fears. I was afraid I would fail at this epic event in my life. I was afraid because I had never done it before. It was an unknown thing in my books.

Many times we fear because it is something we do not know. When we meet a person for the first time we may fear that they will not like us, that they are more sophisticated than us or whatever, you know why you have been afraid of people. Many times I have been afraid to try out new things because I don’t want to fail. I somehow want to be perfect at it at the first shot, but practice is what makes perfect. Sometimes we fear making mistakes and yet they are some of the best lessons life gives us.

If you have been immobilised by fear and have not been able to venture out and do something, decide to do it anyway. Do it afraid!  If you make a mistake you have learnt one way of not doing it and you are on your way to getting it right.
